While a good wedding and portrait photographer, who owns the latest gear, can take breathtaking images at an event, economically so, for a ton of images, the same approach will not work for food photography.\

Food is not an easy subject to photograph. Every time you pull out your phone to capture an image of a beautifully plated dish at a restaurant, more often than not, the photos don't seem to do justice to the actual dish. It doesn't look as appealing in the picture. This happens because the eye and the camera see differently. An expert food photographer combines his knowledge of lensing, light, textures, and colour theory to make the camera see what the eye naturally does.

Food styling is also an essential and sometimes most overlooked aspect of food photography. While a chef can plate a dish to perfection, they plate it for the eye, combined with the senses of smell and taste, a sensational meal experience is created. Unfortunately, food photography can't evoke the senses of smell and taste. It can, however, make one imagine the scent and flavours by the aesthetics, and that's how a good stylist comes into the picture. Food needs to be manipulated most times to look its best from the point of view of a camera, and that is what a food stylist's job is, to plate for the camera.
